An Update, Just to Let You Know I’m Still Alive

I know it’s been awhile since I posted a new chapter, and I apologize. That should be changing soon, however, so just be patient a little longer, and I promise you will be rewarded. See, I have a few bonus things to give you with the chapter. Anyways, as is my tradition, I will not simply leave you with an update; I will also give you a bonus gift to hopefully appease you. Enjoy.

Tom’s Combat Techniques

Though known for his use of an Arilese monk halberd technique, Tom is actually accomplished in a wide variety of sword styles and combat techniques. This is why, despite his reluctance to kill, most informed individuals consider him a lethal A-rank warrior.

Koeleth Shield and Sword Technique

Tom learned this technique from his father when he was young. It is the most common combat technique in Koeleth, as it is used by the main body of the Koeleth military. It is noted for being more aggressive than most sword and shield techniques, with the shield being almost as much of a weapon as the sword. The guard of the Royal City affectionately adopted the term “Slash and Bash” to describe the technique, and the name stuck. While a relatively basic technique, a soldier who masters the form is arguably more dangerous than most skilled duelists. An aggressive subset of the technique was developed by elite soldiers that emphasizes the shield as the main weapon and the sword as a sidearm, known colloquially as the “Block and Clock.”

Koeleth Dueling Technique

Tom was taught this as a young teenager by a traveling mercenary who lodged in Lilly Pond for a few months while on a mission. It finds its use not in the hands of the rank and file soldier, but of the skilled elite swordsman. Oftentimes, the Koeleth duelist uses a single double-edged longsword and alternates between one-handed and two-handed attacks. At the cost of reduced defensive capabilities, the duelist gains greater speed and power. Duelists have proved their worth time and again, with major battles often hinging on the presence of no greater than 20 or 30 duelists in an entire army. This also means that duelists often feel the greatest loss in times of war. The nature of the style requires a duelist to use less armor than a common soldier and leaves no room for a typical military formation, so a well-trained cavalry could tear through their ranks if the duelists aren’t prepared.

Ekoalreich Dueling Technique

Tom learned this technique from his uncle who was visiting while on leave from military service. His uncle, though a born Cradler like Tom and his father, lives in Ekoalreich in Koeleth’s south, where he learned the technique when he signed up for the local militia. It is distinct from the Koeleth dueling technique in the sense that it is far less elegant. Despite its lack of finesse, however, it is just as effective. The differences are readily apparent: the weapon of choice in the Ekoalreich form is a shortsword or broadsword, and the technique makes use of the empty hand for combat purposes. The sword movements are quick and efficient while the empty hand, often armored with a leather glove or a light gauntlet, punches, slaps, jabs, grabs shields, blocks swinging arms, and does a slew of other things. It requires a great deal of speed and skill to master this art and has all the weakness of the Koeleth form. It is not uncommon to see Ekoalreich duelists fighting side by side with Koeleth duelists, the speed and resourcefulness of the former complimenting the power and skill of the latter. Tom adapted the style to his own tastes, using a longsword or a heavier broadsword instead of lighter blades.

Ariluo Monk Halberd Technique

Tom learned this one from his mentor in the Adventurer’s Guild. His blessed weapon demanded that he learn how to wield a halberd. It has become his primary style of combat. Unlike most halberdiers, the halberd-wielding monks of certain Arilese temples focus on a defensive, close-combat technique, rather than an offensive technique. The technique requires shorter halberds than the norm, but it makes up for it by being relatively fast and versatile. The actions resemble those of a staff or pole wielder’s technique, but with added benefit of having a deadly metal spear/axe at one end. The defensive technique requires a great deal of stamina to use for extended periods of time, but if done correctly, the enemy will be driven off before that point is reached. The monks wear no armor, so they can usually outlast their heavily armored opponents. Tom’s already strong body aides him in using this technique while wearing armor, a wholly unique characteristic among the users of this style.

Ariluo  Jackrabbit Technique

Tom learned this one from his mentor in the Adventurer’s Guild. The Arilese have a wide variety of weaponless martial arts that they practice, making them deadly with or without a weapon in hand. For those whose hands are often preoccupied or unusable, there are several foot-based styles, such as the Jackrabbit. As the name suggests, the technique relies on quick, powerful kicks in rapid succession. The technique is very athletic, requiring the combatant to continually stay in motion. It is designed to oppose the vandals who frequently attack Arilese temples and altars. Tom uses this technique as last resort, because it requires him to remove his armor.

Ariluo Flying Feet Technique

Tom learned this one from his mentor in the Adventurer’s Guild. Another foot-based martial technique, the Flying Feet technique is not as much about attacking as it is about disabling. The technique, as the name implies, sees the user in the air most of the time. Flying kicks, high kicks, jumping maneuvers, even wrapping your legs around the opponent’s head to bring them to the ground, are used in this style. The hands become feet for some of the maneuvers, a prime example of the importance of feet in this technique. Tom uses this technique as a last resort, because it requires him to remove his armor.

Danagir Dueling Technique

After much begging and swearing an oath to never pass the style on to anyone of a non-Danagir descent, Tom convinced Theo to teach him this traditional sword technique from Danagir. The denizens of Danagir take great pride in the history and ancestry, and their fighting styles are no exception. The Danagir are known for a unique two sword dueling technique. The Danagir duelist uses two falchions in perfect harmony to cut their opponent to shreds. To accommodate this technique, the duelist only wears lightweight, mobile leather armor. The technique is as beautiful as it is lethal, consisting of twirling blades, spinning motions and an almost dance-like fluidity about it. Its showiness does nothing to hurt its deadliness. A skilled Danagir duelist is worth ten lesser warriors.

Koeleth Dual Wielding Technique

Tom learned this technique from a Valiant Blade he was traveling with. This technique is famous for being developed by a legendary “Block and Clock” warrior, known as the Black Death for the vengeful trail of destruction he left in his wake, when his family was murdered and he was left for dead. Those responsible for the tragedy stole everything of value from him, including his family shield. A traveling cleric restored him to health before continuing on his journey. The warrior returned to his devastated home, where all he found were two blades, one a shattered longsword from one of his foes, and the other his own bloodied shortsword, left behind for reasons unknown. Vowing vengeance, he took up both blades and hunted down the vandals who slew his family. The resulting style of combat reflected the nature of the “Block and Clock,” but, making use of a pair of shortswords, obviously lacking the defensive elements, therefore making it a fiercer, more powerful technique, if a bit reckless.

Freelance Brawling Technique

Tom created this “technique” from bits and pieces of the other techniques he knows and a few simple barroom brawl techniques, like punching someone in the nose. It is useful for all sorts of situations, and it allows him much more freedom and adaptability than a pure technique.

Demon in the Mist Technique

Tom did not learn or create this technique, per se. It is a berserk, reckless style that he uses when he is pushed beyond his breaking point. He aggressively attacks his foes, getting up close and striking with powerful blows. With unrivaled speed and heightened reflexes, he crashes into his enemy’s line, ignoring what few lucky strikes do hit him. The adrenaline coursing through his veins pushes him on until his rage is sated.

I bet you can’t guess what this is!

Hello, dearest readers. I suppose I shouldn’t need to tell you that I am still without charger, and therefore without chapters 11 and 12. I could, of course, rewrite them, but I would rather not, for fear of forgetting something or messing up a good thing. Anyways, I have a couple of things to do here. The first is a little bit of networking. A friend of mine has a gaming oriented community called The Kind Gamers. As you might have inquired from the name, it is designed to encourage cooperation and discourage toxicity in the gaming community. Right now, he’s posting a lot of his own creations. I suggest you all pay him a visit. You can find him on Discord App, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. The second bit of business is more entertainment. For grins and giggles, I decided to do a question segment, where multiple characters weigh in on a question. Just for fun, mind you. I don’t have long term plans for this like I do for the profiles and the bonus chapters.

Question: How would you describe Tom and Aaron’s friendship?

Cleo: Do NOT talk to me about Aaron if ya now what’s good fer ya! Ah don’t know how Tom tolerates him! He is a lowdown, slimy insect and a man-whore!

Lilly: They seem like an odd pair, but they get along well enough. I think Aaron’s utter lack of concern for anything is an excellent balance to Tom’s extreme reactions to everything. I think Aaron might even care about Tom as a friend…Nah!

Catalina: Aaron is friends with Tom merely for the entertainment he gets out of messing with him. Tom is friends with Aaron for much the same reason. I’m not entirely sure you can actually call it a friendship.

Kristin: Tom is a distraction from what is truly important in Aaron’s life: me! I fail to see why Aaron spends time with Tom when he has a far superior option. Maybe…No! It couldn’t be! Is he…gay?

Aaron: I’m just here to let you know that Kristin is overreacting and I am not, in fact, homosexual.

Mei: Are you only ever going to interview women? Well, I suppose those are most of the important characters you’ve introduced so far anyways. Still, there are important male characters you could interview, too. After all, I haven’t even been introduced to the readers yet. Anyways, to answer your question. I could give you what I know, but what do I get in return? No, not money. I have more lucrative ways of getting that. How about…*whispers* Excellent. Well, if you can do that for me, I suppose I can tell you. Tom and Aaron, despite an innumerable quantity of differences, feel a certain degree of kinship with one another. Though their reasons differ, both of them feel that they owe each other to some extent.

Dustin: Beats me. I’m never around, if I can help it.

Vincent: Well, Aaron is no good in a fight, so I don’t know why Tom would befriend him, but I won’t judge too much. Personally, I think it’s destined to fail. You can’t trust a thief to have your back.

Matthew: I’ve never seen two truer friends! Ahem, no…I have, actually. Lots of times. These just seem to be the oddest of friends. I don’t get it.

Tom: Woah. What’s going on here? Why would you even ask that question? It seems so…irrelevant. Well, I’m not one to judge, I guess. But this seems fairly unimportant.

The Update You were Promised

As the title implies, this is the update you were promised. Please keep in mind that both these excerpts are rough and unedited versions of stories that are separate from the current Chronicles of Koeleth and connected only indirectly to the current story. Enjoy.

This is Not the Update You Deserve, Nor the One You Need Right Now

So, this isn’t the update I promised, but at this late hour of the night I find myself in need of a distraction from my own thoughts. I figured the best way to do that was to write a little something. I’m presenting you, therefore, with another story stone “story”. Enjoy.

The Cascade of Tears

Maiden
Spirit of many sorrows
Her tears are as numerous as the drops of rain
She dances with the guardian and converses with the wolf
The demon’s fire is extinguished by her power
The cold once known fights her and the fallen hero entraps her
The story changes and strangers become friends
The scattered gather and a dragon is born
Guide of the mirrored twins, friend of the beating heart
The steel warrior and the scholar walk alongside
The golden wolf and the dark flame seek her counsel
Those of noble birth heed her words
Death encroaches only to be beaten back
The listless soul and the ceaseless hunger trouble her
Though woes come she never wavers
History shall remember her

Bonus Stuff

Hey, all. I am still without charger. A thousand apologies. To help make up for it, I have an excerpt from a future chapter of Koeleth. It is unedited and rough, but hopefully you will enjoy it nonetheless.

Excerpt from a future chapter of Koeleth

Tom awoke to see an unfamiliar female torso, wrapped in bandages, hovering over his body. For the briefest of moments a slurry of uncomfortable thoughts ran through his mind as he tried to understand how he could possibly have ended up in this situation. He mentally sighed in relief as he recalled the previous day’s conflict and the corresponding journey to the local tavern. It seemed as if the makeshift hospital room served its purpose admirably, as both he and his companion were healthy and alive, if a little bit sore. Tom declined to alert her to his consciousness, however, as he was very stiff and likely wouldn’t be able to move comfortably for some time anyway. As her chest shifted and swayed, a hand belonging to the same body prodded the various scars and wounds that littered Tom’s body. The recent ones from the day before twinged whenever the woman touched them, and she insisted on touching each one more than once. As she ran her hand over the gash on his left shoulder, he jolted up in pain.
“Agh!”
The woman stumbled backwards, startled by Tom’s sudden uprightness. Unfortunately for Tom, she had finally found his worse wound. Being left handed, and considering most of his opponents were right handed, the injuries to his left shoulder were always exceptionally unpleasant. The necessity of using his left arm meant that his injuries were frequently exasperated by continued combat. Furthermore, they always took the longest to heal, even when magic was involved. Catalina had quickly recovered from her initial shock and resumed her position beside Tom’s bed.
“Oh, no! I’m so, so sorry! Please, forgive me! I didn’t mean to hurt you! I’m so sorry!” the mage blubbered in embarrassed apology. “I’m so glad you’re awake, though! It would have been so tragic if you had died on account of me! I’m not sure I could have lived with myself if you had died!”
“It’s fine! It’s fine. You just hit a sore spot, that’s all.” Tom attempted to soothe her fears. “Besides, there are worse ways to be woken up.”
“There…there are?” Catalina said, tears still in her eyes.
“Yeah, definitely. It could have been a deadly assassin trying to kill me or something to that effect. Instead, it was a beautiful woman checking my injuries. Seems pretty good to me.”
“Uh, um, well…when you put it like that I suppose it is better than some alternatives…” she said, trying but failing to conceal her embarrassment at his compliment. “I’m just glad that you aren’t dead because of me. You risked your life for me, and I’m so sorry you had to suffer such awful damage because of it.”
“It’s okay, really. I am fully responsible for what happened to me. I made a choice, knowing full well what the consequences might be. You got pretty banged up yourself, though. How are you feeling?”
“I’ve been better. But that healer did an excellent job of healing my wounds. You passed out right away after he took me off your hands, so as soon as he was done with me I asked him to check on you. I was so worried!”
“I get it, really. Don’t get too stressed over it. I’m a professional warrior, so I can handle myself. Thank you, though. I really appreciate it.”
Despite his comforting words, the woman maintained a morose, sorrowful demeanor. It emanated from her, a dense and tangible aura.
“So, why are you so sad?” Tom inquired. “It’s like sadness is a permanent aspect of your persona.”
“Well, that’s because it is. I find it exceptionally difficult to feel anything but sorrow. Life is just so tragic all the time. I guess that’s why Sorowa chose me as her paragon.”
“I guess so. I guess it’s also pointless for me to try and cheer you up, then. Not that I’m going to stop trying. By the way, I wear a breastplate in battle. I didn’t receive any chest wounds yesterday. Why were you ‘examining’ my chest?”
“Y-you were awake for that, then? W-well, you can never be too certain about these things!” Catalina tried desperately to justify her actions. “M-maybe the assassin had gotten behind your armor somehow.”
“Is that the story you’re going with?” Tom jested. “Well, you’re not hearing me complain.”

An Unplanned Bonus

I have yet to replace my charger, so I am afraid you will have to wait a little bit longer on chapter 11 of Koeleth (I really don’t want to rewrite that chapter). In the meantime, I’ve been thinking of ways to make it up to you. Well, I have a couple ideas, but tonight I had an epiphany of sorts. In Eirmoda (the world Koeleth is located in), there is a tale about the story stone. The story stone is said to be a magical obelisk that records the lives of the champions of humanity, both good and evil (I swear on my life that this is a real concept and not a convenient distraction). Naturally, all the paragons of the guardians are recorded on the stone, as are all exemplars, renegades, archfiends, slayers, and world eaters (these concepts will be explained later in the story). Well, I thought now might be a good time to introduce the story stone. So, let me tell you the tale of the Shield of the Anguished, one of a number of characters who are prominent in Koeleth. Who is he? That’s my little secret, for now.

The Shield of the Anguished

Wanderer
Guardian of the lost
His heart weeps bitter tears, his mind never rests
He dances with the rain and confers with the shadows
The depraved hero is broken by his blade
The cold entangles him and the wolf bites at his throat
The story changes and foes become friends
The scattered gather and a dragon is born
Ally of valor, friend of the survivor
The mirrored twins and the lion sage follow
The great bear and the ram bow before his might
He keeps the company of those of the story stone
Despair challenges his resolve but fails
The silent death and night sky aide him
Wars ever rage but he never yields
Only age can sweep him away

Excuses, Excuses and More Excuses

Hello, dear readers. I regret to inform you that I have mildly unfortunate news. Last week I promised you the next chapter of Koeleth would be released on Thursday. As you may have noticed, there is no next chapter posted. Well, I am afraid that my original deadline has been forcibly pushed back. Tragically, I did not manage to backup my document, so the only file I have is on my laptop. Neither did I send out a copy to be edited before Wednesday. In an unfortunate turn of events, a puppy decided that my charger cable looked an awful lot like a rawhide, and chewed it just enough to make cease functioning. Needless to say, when your laptop can’t charge, and you don’t have a backup file, you can’t use the files on your dead laptop. This is why there is no chapter posted. I will make it up to you with another bonus chapter in the near future. Hopefully I will be able to get a replacement charger soon. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Koeleth Chapter 10

Nothing special to report. Here is the chapter I promised you.

Chronicles of Koeleth

Chapter X

Voice of the Damned

“Now hold on,” the barkeeper said. “You began this story by saying it was about how Tom met an unexpected comrade. I haven’t heard anything about him meeting anybody yet.”

“Oh, sure, you have,” the old man reassured him. “I’ve told you about Aaron and Collin. I’ve told you about Grace, Dennis and Rydia. These aren’t people you encounter everyday, you know. Well, your grandmother might have at one point in time. And so did I. That, my young friend, is quite off topic, though. Not to mention, I haven’t gotten to Tom’s most unusual—and most important—companion. But we have some time before we get to that. You must know about some of Tom’s other adventures first. Specifically this one.” The old man chuckled at the young man’s confusion and minor frustration.

“Fine, then. Get on with your story.”
“Alistair!” Dennis and Grace said in unison.

“Who’s Alistair?” Collin asked.

“He’s one of our pack mates,” Dennis explained. His abomination power lets him transform into a wraith-like shadow creature. While in that form, he can unleash a mind-numbing, blood-curdling, ear-splitting screech, like the one we’re hearing right now. The problem is…this scream, well, it’s while he’s in between forms. Any transformational abomination knows the pain of being in between forms. Grace knows it, Rydia knows it, and I sure as hell know it. Whatever is forcing him into this half state, it must be stopped, because if we can hearere his screech, the people at the camp can hear it all the more loudly. Right now, there are only two people in that area that aren’t affected, and if this is an attack, they will need our help!”

“Then we better get going!” Theo declared.

“Hold on, Theo,” Tom interjected. “We should get a scope on the situation first. Normally, I am all for rushing in with reckless abandon, but this Alistair’s powers could really cause damage if we aren’t careful.”

“You’re right. What do you recommend, then?”

“Grace, your power allows you to fly, right?”

Der Bonus Content and Such

Hello, my beautiful readers. It is such a pleasure seeing you again so soon! This is the bonus content I promised you a couple weeks ago. I hope you enjoy it. Be warned, it is quite lengthy. Either tonight or tomorrow morning I will have my next chapter up, too. I already have the next chapter after that halfway done, so you’ll see another chapter next Thursday, too. I’m back in action, baby! Hopefully I can keep this pace up.

Chronicles of Koeleth

Extra Chapter

Guardians Part I

“Look at this, Detremenat,” the armored woman said as her perceptive crimson eyes scanned a “living map” of Koeleth, a hand-and-a-half sword hanging at her waist. “The sad human with the halberd just fought off several bandits by himself. It’s impressive how dedicated he is to his mission.”

“Yes, I admire his determination to get the job done,” the bronze-eyed woman in the leather vest replied, resting her hand on the hilt of her broadsword. “It shocks me that you are impressed with him, though, Disciplina. He isn’t one to adhere to any code, and his fighting is altogether sloppy.”

“It is sloppy by choice, Detremenat. The style suits him. You haven’t seen him go on the defensive, have you? It is rare to see such good form.”

“Whatever you say. Regardless, I like his drive. Not like his listless companion, the one with the spear.”

The red-haired, rosy-skinned goddess of control and dedication continued to discuss the humans with her brown-haired, peach-skinned companion, the guardian of the driven and relentless. The vast hall was full of their kind, but each one was distinctly unique from the others. Away in one corner, a flat-chested woman with icy, bluish-white hair to match her opalescent eyes leaned against the wall. Her mouth was covered in a navy blue cloth designed to mask her face, and she wore a similar outfit to Detrememat, save that it came in hues of blue and white, instead of beige and ochre. Leaning against the wall next to her was a svardstav with a cold sheen about it.

“Hey, Isolati.” A cringing, lanky figure who was sitting nearby whispered to the guardian of hermitage and loneliness.

“What, Fearl?” Isolati said exasperatedly.

“Do…do you think they encountered any thing dangerous and scary? The humans, I mean.” Despite his cowering, the pallid yellow man was the scariest thing in the room. The tattered, dark cloak that encased his body bore an unsettling resemblance to a wraith. The dingy hood of the cloak hid his face, just as its many folds hid the dagger strapped to his leg, giving him an altogether terrifying visage. This was the guardian of terror and fright.
